A Touch of Nostalgia with Tin Signs

Posted March 16, 2009 – 1:45 pm in: Retail Products

Today, advertising and promotions are all seen on TV or the Internet or heard over the radio. They all seem to sound, feel and look alike. Advertising used to be a combination of artistry, imagination and originality that you could find on tin signs.

At one time, advertising products was done with style and wit that does not seem to be there in today’s advertising. Some of the advertising was done on metal signs that were produced by the thousands in the 1800s. Then, with the advent of television in the late 1940s, tin signs began to disappear as an advertising tool. Many of these signs were painted or screen painted with the enamel paint or even given a porcelain overcoat that would make them last longer. Well, they had outlasted their use as well as many of the companies and products that they advertised.

You can still find some “vintage” signs that seemed to disappear. You can find Irish signs, street signs, pub signs, beer signs still around. Some are actually reproductions of the originals. There are collectors who preserve these signs as a piece of advertising and artistic history. Just as many collectors preserve wood propellers and brass bells from the past. Even lake house signs have become very collectible items.

Whether they are used for advertising or just decoration, tin signs have a long history that provides us with a nostalgic look at the past.
