Origin and Traditions of Native American Art

Posted March 18, 2009 – 7:21 pm in: Art

There is no record of Native Americans prior to the discovery of America. Prior to Europeans arriving on the American continent, Native Americans had their own traditions, history and art. Native American art is now considered a link between natives and the Europeans. At that time, it was the only way to communicate between two different cultures.

Each tribe or nation of Native Americans is different. This difference is due to different traditions, natural environment, social order and even religious beliefs. When Native Americans came in contact with Europeans, it changed their lives and culture forever. This can be seen in many artifacts from before the 1500s and artifacts of Indian Art found after the 1500s.

Native American art has several purposes. It usually represented myths, religious beliefs, legends or even prophecies. It also helps to keep a traditional link between generations as well as be useful. Some of the most beautiful artifacts found were items that were used on a daily basis, for example painted pots, vases, utensils, hand woven rugs and blankets and even handmade clothing and jewelry. Tribal pendants or jewelry were usually used in rituals or tribal ceremonies.

Nowadays there are two branches of Native American art. There are Native American artists that have gone into the mainstream of making contemporary art-like photographs, paintings on canvas or performances, and others who continue to work using traditional Native American art technologies.
