Take the Pressure off

Posted March 11, 2009 – 2:36 pm in: Education, Healthcare

Remember when you were a kid and your mother said, “Sit up straight!” or, “Don’t hunched your shoulders!” or even, “Keep your back straight!” My mother used to thump me in the middle of my shoulders to get me to set up straight. My mother was a nut for good posture. Unfortunately, most kids are seldom taught about good posture from their parents or even teachers.

The people who never learned about good posture can be seen anywhere because they usually have a stiff neck, their shoulders are hunched forward or pulled tightly back and some have restricted breathing or even tightness in their thighs, legs and ankles. Bad posture usually results in backaches, headaches and other discomfort.

We should all learn about good posture by taking Alexander Technique lessons because since the second grade you have been sitting for hours in chairs and desks that are only there because of economics and convenience. By the second grade, people have already learned to tense their bodies in such a way that it interferes with the natural easiness, balance, support and freedom of movement they should have. These tension patterns are slumping or stiff posture that become normal even if they do restrict our breathing and freedom of movement.

You can restore your natural balance, flexibility and ease of movement by learning the Alexander Technique. It is a time-tested method of teaching that restores the natural positioning of the body. It is not therapy or treatment or exercises, it is more a reeducation of the mind and body. You are taught about the tension that you have developed over the years and discover a new balance in your body by releasing that tension.

The relationship between your head and neck are emphasized in the Alexander Technique in New York. The reason is simply that the head and neck are followed by the body. People have a tendency to compress their heads down into the spine and this creates a whole lot of other tensions in the body. The body has its own built-in “antigravity” reflex and if we can learn to let our heads “float” on top of our spine as nature intended the body then we can release all the pent up tensions.

It should be noted, people who have taken lessons have been heard to say, “I feel like I am walking on clouds.”

Smokers Problems

Before the Njoy, people could buy cigarettes, cigars and tobacco almost anywhere. In fact, people used to be able to smoke almost anywhere, even in designated areas of hospital. Today, many businesses have assigned that state you must be 25 feet or more from the entrance to smoke. People are also more where of how bad smoking is for their health. Everybody knows that smoking causes cancer, emphysema and heart disease and can shorten a person’s life by 10 years from. Smoking can also cost a person thousands of dollars a year. The reason for this is that people are addicted. However, you can now improve your health, lower cost and still feed your addiction with an electronic cigarette. It eliminates all smoker problems except for the addiction.

Bad Venous Circulation

Two therapies have evolved to help increase venous circulation and reduce leg ache and swelling. Rubber floor mats and support hosiery. The stockings are elastic compression stockings hug the legs and are thought to assist the flow of blood through veins back to the heart. Rubber mats, are usually designed with irregular surfaces that are designed to stimulate leg muscles into more varied activity than might occur on hard, smooth flooring. Of these 2 theories, support stockings may be the better choice if they fit properly. SIGVARIS stockings use a special double-covering process on all their compression garments. This process allows for a true 4-way stretch and makes them more comfortable to wear.

Exercise Machines

An exercise machine is any machine used for physical exercise and is better known as health fitness equipment. These range from simple spring-like devices to computerized electromechanical rides like a commercial treadmill to recirculating-stream swimming pools. Most exercise machines incorporate an ergometer. An ergometer is an apparatus for measuring the work a person exerts while exercising as used in training or cardiac stress tests or other medical tests. Weight machines use gravity as the primary source of resistance to the person using the machine. Each of the simple machines changes the mechanical advantage of the overall machine relative to the weight.
